Position Summary
 
The AmeriCorps Member Disaster Case Manager is a highly motivated and organized individual with a passion and talent for helping others.
 
During Blue Sky Periods, the AmeriCorps Member Disaster Case Manager helps to train affiliate volunteers in disaster case management to boost Sewa’s pool of case managers in the event of an emergency.
 
In the aftermath of a disaster, the AmeriCorps Member Disaster Case Manager will serve alongside Sewa’s team of disaster relief professionals to deliver direct services and identify appropriate strategies to assist families in crisis. AmeriCorps Member Disaster Case Managers utilize their knowledge of the community to establish effective relationships with neighbors in need, provide case management, referral, and seamless coordination with other community and supportive service activities that promote recovery support.
 
Essential Functions
 
Outreach to victims/survivors of disaster or emergency
 
Maintain a caseload of 15 cases at any given time after disaster
 
Assess unmet recovery needs with the client through interviews
 
Conduct home visits
 
Explore all available options and identify the clients’ own resources and access government and community resources that will address the disaster-caused need
 
Work with clients to develop a Recovery Plan
 
Make appropriate referrals to fill gaps in assistance
 
Stay current on available resources and services
 
Have a comprehensive understanding of available programs
 
Track referrals and services
 
Keep a robust notes of the work done on the case on CiviCRM
 
Maintain case files and other paperwork as required
 
Follow-up with clients until files are closed
 
Prepare and submit reports as required
 
Provide translation and interpretation to clients
 

 
Members may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities, as requested by their Supervisor, in alignment with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant, and subject to reasonable accommodation.

Bilingual preferred -- Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Urdu or Chinese
 
Public speaking skills

Ability to work well in a Team
 
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Academic, Training and Experience Qualifications
 
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or ongoing studies and comparable work experience in that can be applied to the requirements of this position
 
Service Conditions
 
Must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent U.S. resident.
 
Enrollment in the program is contingent on the results of a National Service Criminal History Check that includes FBI fingerprinting and national record check, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal background check.
 
Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual Demands
 
Physical demands include: transportation of lightweight boxes of brochures for presentation set-up and arrangement of chairs at presentation site

The intellectual demands include: capacity for research, knowledge of the material, and an ability to assess needs of the intended audience to determine the necessary response.

This position will occasionally require driving or carpooling to Rosharon, TX.
 
SERVICE SITE CHANGES
 
Disasters such as hurricanes, floods, epidemics or other emergencies may necessitate service be provided remotely or virtually using cellular or internet platforms.
 
DISASTER REQUIREMENT
 
In the event of a local, state, or federal disaster declaration, AmeriCorps members may be asked on a volunteer basis or be required by OneStar to activate to assist in disaster response and recovery activities within their communities. This may involve virtual service opportunities or in-person service opportunities. This may include service opportunities outside of the member’s standard service hours or in place of their standard service duties. In the event of a large-scale, high needs local, state, or federal disaster, AmeriCorps members may voluntarily or be required by OneStar to deploy to an area outside of their service area to assist in disaster response and recovery activities.
